90 Nissan Axxess Jerking/Bucking problem. Anyone???

Hello all,

I have a 90 Nissan Axxess 2.4L 5 Speed manual with an intermittent and occassional tendancy to buck and jerk while driving. It does it cold or hot. It will drive fine, sometimes all day, plenty of power, no missfires, etc., but all of a sudden it will act up and start to buck and jerk as if it were starving for fuel or the ignition was breaking down severly. The engine will not stall if I let my foot off the throttle and it will idle smoothly, but no matter which gear I'm in, and even at a stop in neutral, if I try to rev up the motor, it will not go above 2500 rpm's and will start to cut out. If anyone is familiar with rev limiters, that is the best way I can describe what happens here. Usually the problem ceases when the engine is shut off and restarted. Then, it could be 2 minutes or a day before the problem comes back proving that this problem is definately an intermittent failure and not something that is completely worn out. I don't know if it's related or not, but the speedo is also intermittently jumping up and down and then sometimes it does not work at all. Is it possible the ECM cannot manage the engine controls properly without a proper VSS input, even though it's a standard tranny?

Has anyone had similar problems with their Axxess and if so, what fixed it? Any other ideas or help here would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Jason P.
