electrical -- flasher and break lights - hooked together

The brake lights use the bolts of the light fixtures for ground.

The running lights use a wire tagged to the body for ground.

If either lose their grounds or a bulb breaks the right way, these systems can interfere with each other by either stealing a ground and/or lighting up the other bulbs.

The only thing in common between the signals and brakes as far as I know is the signal switch itself.

I think I would unplug the harness at the bottom of the steering column to eliminate the signal switch and see if the brakes work right.

If it still messes up, then I would be looking for a short circuit or crossed wires. If I had a trailer light plug, I would start there.

Water has gotten in the hazard switch likely and corroded or seized it out ot up.

Mike thanks for your help on the ignition module, Jeep runs better then when I bought it. I knew what to do but was glad for the second opinion.

I used to have CJ non-tilt column with a combined turn signal/4-way switch in my Jeepster. I experienced a similar problem with the brake lights and traced it down to a broken 4-way flasher switch, the pull-out type on the column. I found if i pulled it out 1/8 inch it was fine, so i drilled a hole in the plastic pull and stuck a cotter pin through it. I was still functional 2 years later when I changed the whole column. Since then I have not managed to break my brake lights.
