Been on the phone all day to various place, seems 1976 was the change for V8 dizzies. Nowhere has one so he's gone to the garage for them to have a good poke around. My dizzy is a 35 D8 & the later one wont fit apparently. I don't want to start taking the timing & that to bits cos' if i bugger it up it is a big thing to get moved to a garage!

Do we actually know what's buggered up Nige ? If its not the actual teeth of the drive, there's a good chance I can make you a repair part. If it IS the teeth, there is a slimmer chance I can fix it.

I have took it to my local friendly LR bloke, he knows LR inside out.
Easier to let him strip it down, Crook Brothers in Preston seemed very helpful. He reckons the bob weight spring might have come adrift, I hope so, there aint any about!!

As soon as my man takes it out he'll let me know. I have spoke to Craddocks, they can sell me a newer dizzy & fit the older drive scew to it. But at £170 i'll hang on before ordering yet!!!

Yep - was just going to say that. I vaguely remember that Warren had to swap the drive over on mine (but as that was the bit that was worn nearly smooth I'm not sure where he got it from).
If you draw a blank, ring Warren. He's done extensive work on more
101's than most I'd suspect (at least 4 to my knowledge, including The Purple One of course).
Pre 1976, the number stamped on the dizzy is 35D8

I cant see that number on it, there are a few numbers on it, but thats not one of them.
Thats the LR part number (from the 101 parts book) - the numbers marked on the part, like 36D etc, are what amounts to a code that identifies the distributor on the line or during distribution - often it may turn out to be the Lucas part number (or Bosch - the two shared a lot more technology than is usually realised) which someone working there would read as being for a V8 so-many-degrees-dwell-angle with yellow flowers on the cap and a type-99 drive dog only to be fitted on Tuesdays. Some parts have numbers that look very much like LR part numbers, though even these can be pre-production trial batches etc. Other parts even have the right LR part number on!

Aha, I remember this, I think. It's the oil pump drive that's different. ISTR I managed to fit a 35DLM8 to an "early" engine though so it can be done.

Having looked up the timing in the past it's one of the ones fitted to the Early RRC as they share the same serial number, I seem to recall HBOL quotes on three dizzys that it could have been and then gives the timing settings for all three so it's defo not a 101 only specific dizzy as Haynes never did a book of lies for the 101.
Nige - Just quote the full number on the side of the Dizzy and I'll look in the HBOL again for the RRC.

AFAIK the 101 used a more or less standard range rover engine, so that would figure.
HBOL say:
41326 3 deg BTDC 41487 5 deg BTDC 41680A 7 deg BTDC 41681A 5 deg BTDCso setting it at 5 degrees ought to be credible.
It's also got centrifugal advance figures if you wan to check 'em.
It also say 35D8 later models 5-7 BTDC static
4-8 deg ATDC at idle with vacuum retard pipe attached.so that'll be one with a vacuum retard pipe, which I've never seen.
Spot on Austin - that's what Warren swapped over. I remember now.....
Lets hope mines not buggered then.
