Took out a 2002 TD5 ES today....

First thoughts -

Felt solid - a lot more than my 300 ES Did'nt roll on tight bends - ACE I suppose... Did'nt creak/rattle - although the spare wheel lying in the boot did move about a bit.

So far so good but, and it's a BIG but....

When slowing down there was a noticable noise coming from drivers footwell. I can only describe it as a 'droning' sound, as if the front wheel was rubbing something.. The mechanic then came out with us on another test drive and said they all do that - it's because the throttle is fly by wire and the noise is caused by the belts slackening off when not under any 'drive'. Mmmmmm. It's done under 25k miles and at a LR main dealer.

Thoughts please.

I am not familiar with these vehicles.......... but that sounds like a crock of stuff. it could be a brake disk thing if you were applying the brakes while 'slowing down'.

My Disco was a 2001 model, but it never did anything like this. The Td5 engine seemed remarkably tight and quiet, under load or on the over-run. Thoughts, then:

1. The type of throttle mechanism surely has nothing whatever to do with the noise of the drive belts.
2. All modern engines have drive belts that alternate between driving and idling (for want of a better word) the ancillaries without making this kind of noise.
3. Why any engine noise should appear in the footwell is a bit of a mystery too.

Sorry, but it sounds well dodgy. I would suspect a transmission or hub fault - not the end of the world, but it sounds like they are trying to bullshit you about it, which a bad sign for the long term.

Follow up -

The noise was only noticable from 30mph to rest - becoming more noticeable from 10mph to 0.

The previous owner won't talk to me about vechile either. Time to move on....

Just to clarify (and to settle a family discussion), where are the TD4/5/6 engines made? I thought they are all British built (at least the TD%), but Disco driving brother in law claims BMW make them all.

TD4 and 6 are BMW designs, AFAIK. the TD5 is a LR design which was originally going to spawn TD4 and TD6 using common parts, but only the TD5 was near production when BMW took over.

Mind, dunno where they're actually assmebled.
