2002 Vectra Cambelt Replacemnt

The subject of cambelt replacements seems to have come up numerous times. However on a search throug Google Groups its not clear if the reduced replacement interval applies to all Vectras with the ecotech engines. I have a 2002 '51' 1.8 16V and the service book states every

8 years or 80,000 miles for the toothed belt and tensioning pulley.

Can anyone shed any light on this.

As a precaution I would advise replacement of the cambelt and tensioning rollers at 40K mile intervals on all 16V Ecotec petrol engines.

The service book says 8/80 but Vauxhall actually recommend 4 years/40,000 miles (whichever comes first).

This is a pain (and expensive) but it is worth doing.

To be fair, most manufacturers say something similar.

The interval has been reduced to 4 years or 40,000 miles on all 1.6 + 1.8

16V ecotech engines. This was following timing belts/tensioners failing before 80,000miles. The main cause of the timing belt failures was the tensioner, and as such all vauxhall cambelt kits come with a modified tensioner. It is also recommmended that the 2 idler pulleys are replaced at the same time. Although this may appear expensive (around £100 for parts alone using genuine vauxhall), it is far cheaper than having a timing belt fail (anything from a few bent valves, to a totally destroyed engine).

Strange,

My local VX dealer quoted 85+VAT to do the belt on my wifes 1.8 16v Astra.

I am certain they are the same engine so should cost the same to do as the parts are the same.

This I would assume would be proper Vauxhall parts as it's a main dealer.
