Mk3 XR3i a Classic? Discuss.

They rot and lots of people will have crashed them, so they'll get rare. OTOH, they're not particularly great AFAIK. Nowhere near as much as a mint MK1 or 2 GTi would go for (90 spec 16Vs go for £3K in mint condition), and lots more of them actually still exist. The fact that they probably drive like shit is going to stop a lot of people buying them as usable classics, and nobody's going to buy one to put in the garage and look at...

I quite like the looks of the early, unmodded '3i. I had a Caspian blue one near enough identical to that in '92. A726 GCM. If it'd had a better engine than the CVH, it would have been quite a nice car IMO. One of those 2.0 Zetec lumps would improve one no end, as would the MTX75 'box.

I agree that they're not as good as a nice Mk2 GTi though, but the Escrot is as nice, if not nicer, to sit in. I suspect this is why they sold so many.

In news:ZM7Af.104909$ snipped-for-privacy@newsfe4-win.ntli.net, john wrote something quite bizarre, possibly in an effort to confuddle the world. It went like so;

I am. I can't think of more than about 5 jap cars I'd consider owning.

The ones I would consider are the 240Z, 260Z, MX5, Legacy Turbo Estate, and possibly an Impreza if they made one with a decent interior.

The CVH has its good points, but they're few and far between.

Quite torquey, and if you don't rev them they're reasonably smooth. Utterly without finesse above about 4500 rpm though. Really very horrible indeed at high revs.

Good on fuel though, and cheap to fix.

I had one of those, but mine was silver and a bit shagged out. That one is truly mint by the looks of it, and I'd have it if I could shift some of the present fleet.

Someone's coming to look at the 911 next week :'(

Economies of scale, innit? They need fixing a lot.....

That is one damn *shiny*, damn straight E28.

SteveH - itchy bidding finger?

It is perfectly acceptable to call someone who would pay four figures for a 24 year old 1.6 CVH engined Escort - that is unexceptional in every way - an idiot.

In fact, if anything, referring to them as idiots is an injustice to the word "idiot".

An RS Turdo, I could forgive. A Mk1, Mk2 I could forgive. A Mk3 RS1600i, I could /possibly/ forgive.

But a high mileage XR3i ? wtf ?

whats the details on the 911?

What?! What development prototypes did you have? I know the 1.6/1.9 Peugeot engines can sound a bit lumpy, but the Golf?! They're exceptionally smooth, especially compared to the Coarse, Vibratory and Harsh.

Agreed. That is lovely and a steal at the price.

Not going to happen. Got my new one which is clubspec with leather and sunroof. It still has a really crappy centre console. Everything else is quite nice. But after driving the Legacy you just can't compare them.

Yes, indeed.

I'm SteveH and I have an E28 fetish.

Why not buy it and lose the Marea? You aren't going to get the chance at many in that nice of a condition.

Yea I agree with Lordy here - that car has NO redeeming features, at all.

You drive a 206 and have dedicated a section of your website to it, so, quiet down front.

Heh - what I, you or anyone drives, makes no difference to the fact that that particular escort was overpriced, and that Mk3 Escorts were on the whole, s**te.

At least my car has some redeeming features. It's a nice colour and the rear window heater is well fast :)

I used to own a black 84 'B plate XR3i it was my first ever "fast" car, used to think it was great, and it was too, until you tried to race a 'proper' fast car!!

What was the performance figures for one of these anyway?

Also could anyone tell me the differences between the XR3i and the RS1600i? apart from the face they had different wheels..
