How much of these people are a result of inadequate mental health-care and / or drug related? I know what you are getting at now, but I think a lot of people in those positions either get there through a f*ck up in the system that's supposed to deal with them, or they are there as a result of a crystal meth habit or something similar.

Seriously though, I have been mulling it over since I read your post, and yes, perhaps my position on the NHS is vastly influenced by my 'healthyness' if you like. Kudos for 'awareness raising' as Dawkins might term it. Maybe chronic conditions should be NHS'd, but the toe nail group should be under a PAYG system.

And you know what? despite my moaning, that's how I'd keep it. Needs an overhaul though (management, etc). As I said in a previous post, I don't wish anyone any particular harm, but I don't want to be funding pedicures.

The fact that every governemnt steals doesn't make it right, and no matter how one dresses it up taxation is theft. Customs duty is perhaps the most blatant form of theft. Note that school bullies refer to taking dinner money off other kids as "taxing" and in the principles and practice of their operation they are right.

They can do the same here for other medication that is banned, but legal elsewhere.

They do the same over there for paracetamol and many other drugs that are almost universally legal elsewhere.

Let's face it, Saudi and other such countries are hardly shining examples of great low-tax states.

No, you're wrong. If you want to play that game then taxation is slavery, where I have to work for a minimum of four hours a day for the state before I can begin to feed my family. The one property that I have the absolute right to is my own person.
