OT: Bottled Water Tax?

Hah! No, it isn't completely false. You haven't been following the PepsiCo bottled water deal I take it? They're admitting that Aquafina is ... ready for it?... tap water.

And since you *like* it , but it's not a need, just a want, then acc. to you it shouldn't be taxed? Yeah, right...

But if were going to

Algae blooms in some lakes here, too, however, NO ONE that I know drinks directly from any lake. There are warnings about preventing your pets and livestock from drinking such water.

Likewise, here in Edmonton. However, recently, they started encouraging us to use over-priced blue BAGS, instead of the previously supplied, for free, blue boxes. I've tried everywhere to buy blue bags, in large quantities, at a discount. No luck. Years ago, one could buy crates of 200. Not any longer, at least in central Alberta.

I have to agree: if the water stunk, as it does here in the spring, thanks to all the chlorine they have to add because of run-off, I just STOP drinking water until the smell goes away. There are LOTS of much more tasty optional beverages, such as juices, pop, etc..

Not all water is the same.

Someone wants to stop on a road trip and grab a bottle of purified water. Someone going to the park to work out wants to pick up a liter of purified water. Someone who wants just a non chlorined and flouride drink of water buy a bottle of water.

That makes people a "sucker?"

Let's start with post term abortion. You go first!

Algae taste cannot be filtered out by a water plant barring an expensive process!

No, it should not be taxed, It is water purchased from city water plants and then purified. The company is taxed. I chose to pay much more for the purified water than it is worth from the tap. The company is already taxed.

I got an idea though. Let's tax breathing. You go first.

For decades, bottled water was NOT sold at the average roadside stop and everyone got along just fine. There are LOTS of alternatives...such as planning ahead and bringing your own supply of water...from the tap.

No town or city that I know of, in Alberta, draws water from a lake subject to algae blooms.

We were talking about North America, NORTH of the Rio Grande.

Double taxation. People who are on city water are already paying a fee/tax. Why should you or I have to pay another fee/tax just because it's bottled. The containers are recycleable and the government assumes no liability for the bottled water itself only for the tap water that emerges out of your spigot.

No one is saying it is a necessity. However, it is a luxury and a multi billion dollar business. That itself created billions in tax revenue right? I might consider it somewhat a necessity though. We forget how imporant the bottled water industry can be come a tragedy. When KATRINA happened, Dallas businesses donated their stocks of bottled water to Katrina hit areas.

The bottled water industry has these products on every shelf in the nation. I cannot think of a better place for them to be ina time of crises and being changed out for profit while they arent being used for tragedies.

As for plastics. I don't think the answer to getting people to stop using plastics is to tax. Its to teach and improve the quality of recycling programs .

In this house, we let nothing go to waste. Not even an old TV set goes without being broken down and recycled.

Not to mention the bottling company is purchasing this water from some city, somewhere.. and if they are getting it from a spring then they own the land and are paying a land tax...

Same at our place...almost everything that stops it initial function can be turned into something else...'cept for the microware....we kept the light bulb and the glass platter, though!

Go Mavs stated that it was "completely false" that bottled water can be tap water. He was incorrect.
