Reliability, 30,000 mile report, Corolla 2003

Two things on the car have worn out. The "hair" wore completely off the spot on the accessory carpeting where the driver's heel rests, and the weather stripping on the back side of the driver's door is worn through in a spot about a foot long. It does not seem to have compromised the seal that it forms though, as no increase in wind noise or draftiness has been detected.

Also, the rear-view mirror developed a buzz, but this was fixed by adjusting the mirror slightly.

The reason the weather stripping wore is because the driver has a rather wide hind end and rubs the stripping when he enters the car.

*** Conclusion ***

Overall I give the car an A+ for reliability, since the carpet and mirror things are insignificant and it is understandable that Toyota's engineers did not foresee the weather stripping problem because their long-term test drivers probably don't weigh well over 300 lbs.

The weather stripping will be temporarily repaired with electrical or duct tape (which is much slipperier than the soft rubber weather stripping and should take a lot longer to wear through) and may eventually be replaced. The accessory carpets have been replaced with heavy duty rubber mats. The mirror has not resumed buzzing since it was adjusted.
