The firearm classes at nine, were taught by professionals, on the par with the Drill Sergeants, which of course we know you swabies know nothing about. I was drafted before Vietnam, and it was a surprise to me, and the other tens of thousands inductees each day, at Fort Ord, filling all the barracks, not used since WWII. you were drafted before 1957? 10,000 people per day.... 50,000 people per week, and figure 50 weeks/ year for inducting recruits...for the year... Two years standard tour of duty. 10,000 x 50 x 2 = a one million man army... plus the lifers already on active duty..

Actually I didn't stay in the reserves after I found the pension I was earning wouldn't be paid because Congress passed a no-double dipping rule. I saw dozens of other people not re-up for their reserve status...
Some would call that self preservation. But then I didn't think one would find a person bragging about his status. I find it ironic that a nation that fought a war for freedom from slavery was required to force its population into forced servitude (some states used press gangs) to end slavery.
