electrical questions.

OK, I have my 65 amp alternator fitted and working and a big 'ole battery too. Now I have the leisure battery that came with the Land Rover, handy as I needed one for 'other stuff'.

Question 1. I need a split charger, something that will wait for the main battery to be fullly charged then will charge the 'leisure' battery, where do I find such a thing, cheap? (I can build boards from kits).

Question 2, I have an old filter coffee maker, it draws 900W at mains voltage, is there such a thing as an inverter that can supply such current?

Question 3, the 'nominal capacity' of my leisure battery is 90Ah, is this enough to make coffee a la question 2? (needs to supply for around 10-15 minutes).

I don't think this is particularly expensive. Do a Google for 'caravan supplies' or summat similar.

Yes, but they get bigger and more expensive as you up the ante. They also kick out a fair bit of heat themselves I think. Martyn may have more experience of this than I do.

Maplin stock them, as do Machine Mart, so you should get specs from either site. A 12V coffee maker would be cheaper!

900W at 12V is about 100 amps, give or take (accounting for some losses in the inverter as well). So you'll use about a quarter of the battery (very rough calculations, YMMV).

Mark - search maplin.co.uk for 'split charge'. They do a single module for £8.

yes, but probably cheaper to buy a 12v coffee maker

It's an ASP site (badly error trapped and running an MS Access database at a guess). So the required data isn't in the URL.

Go to the site and search for "coffee maker".

Generally available - but not cheap - although that depends on what you call cheap.

Yes - but a new 12 coffee maker would be a LOT cheaper - and smaller.

The capacity is enough - but the maximum advisable current from the battery is probably not, depending on the type of battery. A 900w inverter will draw something close to 100A, but if it is a deep cycle battery this is probably about five times the maximum current draw for long life. A starting type of battery would be OK, but the depth of discharge will be getting rather high for one of these. JD

Any auto-electrical place will have them.

For question 1, speak to this guy, he supplied me with a very good voltage sensitive relay for just this purpose. Not too expensive either!
