ODD NOISE..!

Is it a prolonged noise or something akin to the duration of movement of the vehicle as it changes it's attitude under deceleration/acceleration?

Might be worth pumping some fresh grease through them if they have nipples. Likewise the propshaft joints.

Not exactly related but while on the subject of new suspension, did you put new bushes on as well. I can;t remember the exact procedure but there is something in the back of my mind about only tightening things up once the correct attitude has been found for the vehicle lest the bushes suffer a shortened life. Maybe they are groaning already :)

My Friend and I put parabolics and es3000 shocks on my S3 88 today.. Took us 6 hours and we just about managed it..Our combined skills seem to just cover a 3 spanner rating in the manual.. hehe



Any way Hurrah ! the back now sits level with the front and dosnt sag horribly. the steering is loads lighter and dosnt drift all over anymore.So great news there.



BUT , when you release the accelerator to decelerate it makes a strange windy grindy noise. Sounds almost like someone blowing air under the front end .( free wheel hubs on/off no change)



I assume its from the transmission or diffs..?



Anyway only occurs under deceleration and has put a downer on an other wise succsessfull day.



The only thing i can think of is , as it now sits higher up, the uv joints on the drive shafts are at more of an angle..?



To be honest i have no idea and wondered if anyone has seen this problem or heard this odd noise.



You know if u pull off with too low revs and the gearbox makes a low grindy whooshy noise. Its kinda like that , maybee.

Yes not prolonged only as the vehicle changes its attitude.. Id say. at 50mph , release throttle, makes noise for maybee 4 or 5 seconds until revs are low again. If u dip the clutch it stops the noise..

It's your wallet breathing out. Keep your foot off the throttle, it'll go away.

As a 101FC driver your theory sounds quite sound, in fact try driving in a 101FC and then you'll *really* know what the propshaft rumble sounds like. Here is a quote from the 101 faq

shaft, especially when coasting - ie front shaft is spinning rapidly but not being driven by engine power. The extreme angle of the front propshaft causes this vibration.

Somewhere out on the web are details of how to "roll" the diff to alter the propshaft angle and reduce the noise, but just at the moment I can't find the link.

Some of this caused by the change in angle of the prop, as the changed suspension geometry causes the front diff to nose down slightly more

Do not forget to check all the bolts in about 50 to 100 miles time as things will settle.

Right after i did mine i had the same sorta noise. On mine it was the centre sliding joint on the rear prop. the change in angle was enough to make it sit slightly differently and make the wear evident. Shows itself as a scary loud rumble (slightly grindy rattly rumble too) on the overrun (so as you let off the accelerator).

It sounds like youve got the same problem!

To check if it is the rear prop, take it off and then go for a brief drive with it in 4wd.

That sound very much like the problem..

I replaced my whole prop. I got a second hand one, but new ones arn't that expensive.

Hi Jason,

Chances are that it could be because you've altered the working range of the Universal joints, ie perhaps before they operated 3-7 degrees for example, now they working 5-8. (figures are speculative, and for example only!)

You could try removing the rear prop and engaging 4wd and try again (using only fwd) if noise goes away, thats the problem.

If this is so, I would recommend changing the joints, as a) they are cheap and b) If the constant riding over worn/unworn bearing area causes a failure, then that *IS* going to make a big noise...

Also the working range of the expansion joint of the prop will have changed. The prop will now need to be slightly longer as the rear suspension is further from the body. Could be that the prop wont

*stretch* due to an established wear pattern, causing a end load into the handbrake etc. Removal of prop as above will show this up.
