don't go there - spares are reputedly horribly expensive (seen prices of >£1000 for a cyl head

Why diesel? Seems wrong unless you are going on expedition across Africa. But then I don't like diesels...

Does anyone have any ideas if there is an archive of engine power curves anywhere ? I have been offered four different engines recently and I haven't a clue whether they are any good for a 101. The 101 manual on the other hand HAS the power curve !

I have been offered a 2 litre diesel, a Merc engine, a Mitsu (??) , and another one whose codes escape me for the moment.

How do I compare them !

Did to me to, but it was a TDi

Its a Diesel, from a "400" ? Direct injected

Oh and free, though it needs rebuilding, but that doesn't scare me.

Certainly the Northern bit - we want to get it to Egypt in the future.

Reducing TCO, especially if the chancellor buggers the price of LPG.

If it's a 101 I'd buy the biggest lump you can shoehorn in it! Somebody must have a 4.6v8 going spare. Or how about the 6.2l v8 diesel mentioned in another thread?

I quite fancy a diesel engine for mine too. I was all set to LPG it, but if its not going to be so cheap soon then a diesel would seem to be the way to go instead. May aswell put the £300 i would have spent on the LGP kit towards a diesel engine..

Is it possible to get LR Tdi engines cheaply? I'm happy to rebuild it first. Or would my best (+ chepest) bet to be to get something else?

I think somebody on here mentioned a 2.8 turbo diesel out of an isuzu trooper the other day. Theres a complete car on ebay for £650 atm, so this doesnt sound too unresonable a proposition! Would this engine move a 101 okay? I imagine its more powerfull than the V8, so it should!..

Thanks for the tip off. There are any numbers of engines when you start looking. I would just like to know what the power curves are, rather than guessing !

Hi, we recently put a 300Tdi into a 101 for a customer and it makes a big difference to the running costs-can't remember which gearbox was used, but it may have been changed at the same time. The 101 disc brakes were put in at the same time, so this makes it a very "driveable and economical" 101. If you want to know more give Roger a ring at the Zeus garage as he did all the work and has driven a number of 101's so can give a decent comparison.

good source of engines are the older daihatsus, too. they do 2.8 nonturbo and 2.8 turbo, but the particular point is that the cars die of rust... hence plenty around. Engines seem pretty bomb-proof, and they can be fitted to LR products.

they seem to last forever in daihatsus. some of them were 2.5s, so make sure you know which engine it is. Dunno what power and torque are like. The info must be out there somewhere...

If so it's a V8 4litre. Grab it, it's brilliant. BUT make shure you have the relevant ECU hardware with it, and know someone thet can convince it to work without alarms etc.
