Shagged ECU or a problem with the ignition. Ones that age had the flapper injection system (Lucas 4CU) and did indeed have a distributor - I've seen them with both contact breaker points and breakerless "electronic" points.
The ECUs on these (from the research I was doing a while ago) have a tendency to die due to dry joints - there is a place I found at

Well if you have put a bid on the car, then you have to honour that bid, that's the way an auction works.
Yeah, but it does have to be as described is what I meant!

Missing a beat could be lots of things, but I'd start with a full service (if only to get a much of the Slick 50 out as possible) and new plugs, cap, rotor arm and ignition amplifier. Have a good look at the leads as well.
ECU is possible, but IME that seems to be everyone's immediate thought but rarely the actual cause. It's also the most expensive thing to swap!
While you've got the plugs out do a compression test and see that you get fairly even numbers across all the cylinders. I'd also want to see nice clean coolant (it seems to come in all different colours these days, but not rusty brown). And clean or black oil, not milky!
Yer man has 100% feedback on a mix of 65 selling and buying transactions. A good sign I would say...
