Paradise by the dashboard light! '65 coupe

Hauled out the beast today... my '65 coupe after a long winter's sleep.

She fired up after a few kicks of the pedal, a little rough at first, smooth sailing now.

I got to work on something I had wanted to get at for some time but ran out of time last year. The gas gauge. It never seemed to work completely. I would add $20 [CDN - $15USD] but the needle would move hardly a 1/4. The fuel sending unit was replaced when I first got the car, as was the gas tank.

So I bought a replacement gauge off ebay late last year.

I got the cluster out - I've done this before years ago, so no problems.

I get the replacement gauge out and to my shock - it IS for a '65, but it must be for a GT not the standard gauges, so the face is smaller. Now that I've got the cluster pulled out I'm pissed.

But, I turn the smaller gauge over and notice that the heart of the thing is identical to the one I have. It's just the face that's different. Oh, and the needle on the GT gauge point up, mine points down.

So I carefully bend the tabs on the face that hold the face onto the unit and when I open both up and compare - they're identical!

The swap took about 15 minutes.

Having had the cluster apart I clean it out and put a new bezel on. Man these repro bezels from Taiwan leave a lot to be desired. I think I'll search out a better repro next time.

Just one question for the group - and this would only apply to '65 Mustangs with standard gauges - when the car is off, just how "EMPTY" does the needle go? I got the needle hooked into the two springs contacts properly, and it seems to be the same as the other gauge I had, but when off, the gauge is almost a half tank off the side of the gauge. No, the needle is not overbend. Just curious what others show. I'll have to check out some web sites too that might show a full cluster and the gauge to check.

Looking forward to driving her to work every day from now until late October!!
