Didn't a certain filter company run a contest back in the 50's where you could win money if you had the lucky number on your air or oil filter?

There -is- a differnce between a "generic" filter that is sold by it's threaded hole size/seal diameter (fits anything from a tercel to a chevette) and a filter made for a specific vehicle/engine. Go look at the parts books for the aftermarket filters, they sell them by size not application. As long as it screws on and doesn't leak, it "fits" that application as far as they are concerned.
And you got that erronious information, where?
Uh, the parts books at the parts store? Go check out their application charts, they "fit" filters to cars by the size of the filter. They don't make different filters with the same "fit" with different paper micro sized etc for each application
