When we see VIDEO of a high ranking officer, in Iraq, saying something about the situation, would you say he's telling the truth, or is it a safe bet that the video has been altered somehow?

None of them say the Iraqi army or police are even close to handling their own affairs without our help. Beginning in 2003, Rumsfeld & Bush were saying that the Iraqi authorities would be ready in 3-6 months, 6 months, "maybe a year", depending on which press conference you want to refer to.
It is not 2007. If they can't handle their own affairs, it's because they don't want to.
What other measure of success do YOU think of, in terms of evaluating the war? You can't say it's succeeding or not unless you have the words to describe what you are evaluating.
You only remember what you want to remember. That is old news. The Iraq government is working under difficult conditions, I give them time to sort things out. The commanders will tell you today that the surge is working. Wait, if you can hold it, til Sept or the fall report, if it shows to be in the dumper, then I might be pursuaded to seek a differnt path in Iraq, such as pulling our troops off the streets and back to secure locations as one possibility. My thoughts beyond I don't want to contemplate at this time although I do have a plan in mind and it is not total withdrawal as the defeatist democrats want.
September's not that far away. And, any government that has to operate in a "green zone" isn't much of a government.
What measures of success are you thinking about? You can't evaluate the situation unless you can verbalize the meaning of success.
We shall see what progress is being made. The top officer will issue a report. I trust his judgment. In any case I would not be for a total withdrawal and there is movement now in congress that agrees with me. Even biden agrees that to withdraw would be a big mistake. I am quite certain regardless if it's a republican or democrat in the WH, we will still be in Iraq in 2009 and perhaps beyond regardless of the outcome this fall.
Considering that Baghdad contains the largest embassy we've ever built, I'm sure there'll be quite a contingent of soldiers there for a long time.

One death is "unacceptable," in war or in an accident. The fact is whenever we were fighting a war, people died. The point is even more people are dying every day in the US, like the 43,000 last year alone in auto accidents for no purpose. At least those young volunteers loosing life and limb in the war have a purpose.
We have been lucky that so relative few have died during the four years of the current world wide war with the radical Islamic terrorists. We lost twice as many marines at Iwo Jima, 6,820 in one week, in comparison.
What you lefty kooks still do not understand is that if we do not unit in this county, and forget all the political crap to win elections, we will have even more Americans die. Not only in the mid-east and around the world, but on our own streets.
