Better the sheer pin than another part of the winch. That's what it's meant to do. Its only on the handle part of the winch. I think I was over doing it a bit as it really was ploughing its way out with the wheel and back axel acting as a great ground anchor. I heard that the Salisbury diff guards like you had can make reverse recovery a bit of a nightmare too.
