I only do it when there's only me and another front seat passenger in the car - just because sound coming from the rear speakers is less intrusive than even low volume from the fronts.

It makes a bit more sense now. It also makes more sense that I have frequency gaps in my hearing, typically where conversation and speech is. I have to turn the music down so I can hear what's being said... :-)
