OT: Message from Dan

I'll buy one in memory of Dan.

Indeed; that's the thing, really. Few of us can be as literate as Vamp when it comes to matters such as this.

And Vamp, like, no offence, but it's kinda ironic really! ;)

I don't know him well, only from his posts on usenet, but he seems like a really nice guy. I hope things go as well as they can do.

In the spirit of tributes to Dan I'll say this:

Dan's roughly the same age as me too. I'd known about his rollercoaster Cancer predicament for a few years and had always been impressed by the way he kept it pretty low key and seemed to be enjoying cars, giant sandwiches, his friends/family and life.

During a hospital stay of his sometime in 2006, we got to talking on MSN about films. He mentioned he hadn't seen a couple of ones I had enjoyed so I made up a DVD and sent it to his house so his parents could take it along to him in Hospital.

Not long after that, I spent a bit of time being quite ill. Using my full DanSpec T-Mobile 3g Data card from Hospital, I told him of my predicament and without any prompting he burned a stack of 7 or 8 DVDs full of movies for me to watch in bed and duly posted them to my parents house so they could take them to me and flatly refused any form of reimbursement for materials or postage.

From my limited experience of being poorly, I like to think I had some idea of what he was going through while he was couped up in Hospital. We had long MSN conversations at odd times of the day where I would make an observation about life in the health system and he would expand on it, or mention how his experience differed.

I had plans to get a car for entertainment rather than simply transport from before I got ill. When I got out of Hospital Dan encouraged me to get the car I wanted rather than just make do. A stroke of luck meant I was in the financial position to do this.

I don't regret a second of MX-5 ownership and my car tickles the "life's too short" rev limiter at some point every day.

I'm glad that when the time came to sell the V6, I like to think it was at least partly the regulars of this group who persuaded him back into hot hatch territory and not to buy a Volvo[1].

Dan's European Clio dash was inspired, and as it happens, just in time.

If he was bitter about his legs stopping working, he never let it show or lost his sense of humour.

If Dan's passing is soon I hope its smooth, serene, painless and without fear.

Grrr.... I quite like my Volvo..

Mustard Mitt, that Clio V6 did look like a giggle and the big pipe sounded ace. Going from that to something sensible would have been a bad idea.

I'm glad this newsgroup actually has its uses occasionally, I think we need to sort another Wetwang Chippy Meet (or similar).

Was talking about all this to my missus last night, it's certainley given us a kick up the arse to get the things done we want to, and stop worrying about what might happen. Meet sounds good too.

Ah well hopefully someone is ferrying the comments to him. Although when my brother went through the same thing I don't think he was paying much attention by now. He did tell me the opiates were nice and he no longer gave a f*ck about the possibility of addiction.

Sounds like a plan - especially as me driving would currently mean taking the van, as neither car is on the road at the moment! Plus, going somewhere by car and not driving would make a nice change.

No I didn't! I did the other half without driving. I definitely remember driving the first half myself!
