I have a 2K1 Maxima SE and just recently received a 2000 BMW 528i (Sport Package) from my wife for my B-day. Now that there's a few inches of snow on the ground here in Chicago the "5" stays in the garage---it literally won't make it down the street with the stock tires. The Max loves the snow and is a gas to drive in the winter. Plus it's easier to ingress/egress with a heavy jacket and boots.
The engine on the Max seems more willing to rev than the BMW, yet they both will do the 0-60 in about the same time---the Max just seems more eager. The BMW has it all over the Max in the curves (much less scare factor) and I shave above 3-4 minutes off my daily 21 mile commute when I'm in the BMW. Yet I still enjoy the Max almost as much for driving fun.
I know I will need snow tires for the BMW next year, and the scenario may reverse, but I have to say that if money is the issue you certainly would not be disappointed with the Maxima.
