can a 215/45R17 be used to replace a 225/65-17 tire

By now that premium is pretty slim, if any. But it should help expand your range of potential cars to buy.

Are you sure the issue is not with those little nylon shifter bushings? Those are a couple of 50-cent parts that can really affect the alignment of the shifter, and hence the timing of movement into first gear. While it could be an internal xmission or computer issue, it could also be those little do-dads. Do a search in the forums for more info. Used to be an often discussed item several years back. Good luck. Bob

That's mostly true, the premium is not very large any more. Boo-hoo for me. But the '96 was the first year for the I30, so it isn't directly comparable to the purchase of a '95 Max.

The I30's have significantly better paint, on average. Also has speed sensitive steering that made it into the Max by '98 or so. And 100 pounds more sound insulation than the Max. And longer overhangs, which slightly reduces handling. The Infiniti may have received better maintenance. Then again....

The '99 Max is just as good as the rest of that generation, IMO, despite what another poster said. It's the 2000 and newer that dropped the ball in reliability. That's why I didn't even consider another I35 purchase.

Oh yeah, the '95 and '96 Max, and the '96 I30, have slightly noisier valves than the later 3 liter engines. Nissan made some change designed to provide a quieter idle.

I keep reading subtle things that the 2000-2003 Maximas are not reliable. Can anybody provide more info on this? I know about the ignition coil problem. Are there other serious problems?

In 1999 Nissan dropped the Galv.metal coating that the 1998 had it's not a real great item but it was a change and not for the better. =============================

They are reliable. There is the ignition coil problem, the auto trans solenoid problem, and the easily warped rotors, but none of those are that bad and it's countered with one of the best V6s ever made.

If it's an auto I hope you've changed the trans fluid a couple times by now (and the anti-freeze).

Not on my 90 or 94!

My 92 maxima is shifting funny. The engine rev is not in synch with the car movement. When I shift to drive and put my foot down on the gas pedal, the engine rev rises but not proportionately with the car speed i.e. lots of rev and very slow movement. Your input please.

If the trans fluid is full, your trans is likely failing.

Could be a cold solder connection somewhere on the circuit board. Probably wouldn't hurt to pull the thing out and have a peek - clean up all connections, inspect solder on the boards etc. Had to do that on the clock assembly in my 89, and would not be surprised if digital dash suffers similar issues. There is info "out there" on how to remove the dash, or I might still have a Web link somewhere..... Good luck. Bob

It's either failing or your tranny controller unit is not sending the correct signal to the solenoid pack to shift into 1st gear. Shut it off, restart, see if the "Power" light is blinking 16 times. If so, it's probably your controller. If it does this all the time, sounds like the tranny's going bad. Chris

WHEN IS THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE COMING?

Well, it appears that the problem was a bad connection...not on the O2 sensor, but on the MAF sensor.

Thanks, David

I have a 2002 Maxima SE with 35,000 miles on it. I've had the damn crank positioning sensor recall fixed 4 times and the #1 coil once! It's a great car if a dealer in 4 major Louisiana cities that's it's broken down in could find out what keeps making this happen! The service engine light's on again so chalk up a fifth time.

Other than that, it's a great car and fun to drive. I left a '94 Z28 after I broke my back in a wreck and this car is only 7/10s of a second slower in the 1/4 mile (stock) - apples for apples.

2 lane highwas in AR are no problem to pass 4 or 5 cars in a row. The fastest I've had it is about 156 and it was (slowly) begging for more. High end horsepower starts to lag about 120 but it's a fun car and surprisingly smoooth, responsive, and stable at high speeds.

I quit racing cars and picked this one; go figure. They typically lose about 1/2 their value in 4-5 years (from the new MSRP price), which is pretty good compared to some manufacturers.

The only think I wish Nissan would do with their flagship car is make the interior a little more sturdily constructed. The console, carpet, and door up, including headliner, material is cheap, attracts dirt excessively, and the road noise is worse than you would expect. Take the POS stock tires off and throw on some BFG street/strip tires and it is quieter; imagine what touring/street tires of any value would do!

The exterior is a little cheap. Nissan uses what appears to be a very cheap paint/clear coat combination. If you scratch the car with something at half the force you could of another manufacturer, you get a white scratch mark (on majestic blue anyway) and have to have an airbrush artist fill it in.

At higher mileage, I would be leary of maintenance, as you have multiple coils, each of which are $100+ to replace each.

To hit the positive, I must say I've recently sent an oil sample to a testing company and at 35,000 miles, there only appeared, by many partical breakdown variables, to be a 5% engine wear factor, according to the oil that was tested.

I too use Mobil 1 and change it out every 5,000 miles and a Mobil 1 filter every other time. Great oil by the way! I replaced all igntion components with Accel and the air filter with K&N and that alone provided a 3/10 of a second gain in the quarter mile and 1.7 MPG improvement, averaged over a 10,000 mile period of time.

If you can afford it, change the shocks and struts out. The stock are cheap. I know I am preaching to a Nissan audience but it's the truth. My InTrax lowering/racing struts on my Z28 were less noisy than the stock Maxima struts over the smallest bumps.

I've probably said to much and started a "flame" thread but I hope it helps!

When I shift my (2002) Maxima into drive from park, first thing in the morning, it delays about 4-6 seconds before the car responds. You can feel it shift but before idle drive kicks in, it is stagnant. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a 1996 maxima and can't get it out of park. It just happened last night. I am trying to figure this out.
