Re: Finding an address for a truck firm

Mine already does, even though it's a staggering 36 years old.

In short it's known as TNHTSW. It's a copmlex device, involving a recent biomass thrttle and brake regulator, coupled to a real time organic audio/ visual monitoring device.

I'm sorry to hear your no doubt more recent vehicle doesn't have these features fitted.

Don't bother telling plod. I've known two people who tried to report dangerous driving, and both were basically accused of 'racing' and threatened with a dangerous driving charge themselves. Basically, they don't want the paperwork and would prefer to bully you into dropping the complaint.

True.

But what do you think is going to happen in reality?

Every Mondeo-clad sales rep is just going to be foot planted, half an eye on the road, and reading their paperwork.

Oh yeah? You've seen the hassle trucks cause by being limited to 56 and you think it'll make things safer limiting cars to 70?.

So if we do this then everyone will be accelerating at different rates to get to 70mph and there will be crashes due to cars reaching 70 before the car in front can, Nissan Serenas getting hit up the arse by Subaru Imprezas for example.. People already doing 70mph won't slow down for *anything*, accident rates will rise, accidents which could be avoided by accelleration will rise, crashes on the motorways will multiply due to people not wanting to slow down from 70 amd hurtling into accidents at 70 instead of slowing down and doing 80 afterwards to make up time, people will concentrate less because "the car will only do 70, so I'll put my foot to the floor and leave it there" Road rage will rise because there'll still be the dawdlers in the middle lane doing 40..

Top idea that.

Jeez, there are too many restrictions in this country as it is.

Abolish motorway speed limits away from built up areas. Let people go as fast as they feel safe. Prosecute people driving dangerously or discourteously. Have speed limits when the weather conditions are bad. Works in Germany. They've got the safest motorways in Europe.

The repeater beacons only need to be in places where GPS is unreliable or roads run parallel or on top of each other - and to allow cars to run destricted at proper off road circuits but force them to run at sensible speeds once they leave. The actual ISA system where a GPS gives speed limit information to the already long familiar type of speed limitation device already seen in large vehicles is simple yes.

If you fancy a thrill, there's a spot on the A66 eastbound from Kesick to Penrith. About 10-15 miles from the motorway. I've seen a wagon breach 70 there!

Do you know how much the avionics in a 747 costs?

What I mean is the autopilot can fly the filed flightplan and yes it requires near normal weather conditions. But human Air Traffic Control is still essential on the ground of course.

Given reliable and complete mapping of all speed limit areas I'd like to try and code a solution.

Aha. As I suspected, you're a programmer. And I'd wager, not a very experienced one. (Not by my 30 years in the business, anyway.) The sort of programmer who, when I was a development manager, would sit in meetings with users discussing requirements, and I could see a dreamy look cross their face and the word "main()" would scroll slowly up their forehead.

At which point I'd hit them across the head with a rolled up spec. And no, I'm not joking.

It doesn't exist.

Oh. Fuck. I'm emigrating if they ever let you try.

Do you *really* think that you - with your poor understanding of the problem and technology - can knock up a solution in VB in a weekend where teams of specialists have failed miserably over the course of years?

Actually, yes, you do, don't you? You can't even decide if it's a good idea or not, ffs.

It would be cheaper to have slots in all roads, with endless ropes being dragged along at the appropriate speed.

All cars would have a gripper thingumejig to grab the rope (no need for engine!!) and all cars would then go along at same, appropriate speed.

Might require some nifty work with the gripper thingumejig at intersections, changing from one rope to another ......

:o)

AFAIAA, the definition of "queue" as applied to vehicles has never been tested. I see no reason why a queue should not have a length of "one".

Colin Bignell pointed out that on a light aircraft it costs £30K for a modest avionics pack. Multiply that by 10 for a 747.
