Hello,

Induction kits will not improve the performance of a car in my experience, I have fitted them to many different makes and models. The main customers are boy racers who throw money at me time after time, so I just go along with the manufacturers claims that are backed up in the car magazines they advertise in. It's amazing how many people with a 1.2 corsa will suddenly claim their 0-60 is 10 seconds after having the induction kit fitted, but forget to count the first 4 seconds! Boy racers are a fantastic source of income. Tell them a new exhaust will make their car faster and they take out loans, they must be mad!

I am 29, my first car was a 1.8 Cavalier (gp8), cost me £650 to insure. My current car is a Peugeot 406 2.1TD - Group 11 costs me £1100 a year with no no-claims, no accidents and no points, but allowed business use (That adds £600). I got a quote for a VW Polo G40 last week, £650 per year FC - SD&P only.

University education isn't helping you, is it, Peter?

Probably because you bought a newish car :-P

Where do these numbers come from? It seems that some people can insure stupidly fast cars for hardly any money, and others can pay loads for a sensible roundabout!

Some people dont bother shopping round. I didnt because I was half way thru a year when I got the MR2 (previous car was a 2.0l Volvo GLT which was stupidly cheap), but when June comes and I renew hopefully I'll be able to save myself a few hundred quid on what I'm paying now.

I was given a renewal on the Passat of £580 with the RAC. Did a search on Confused.com and got it for £380 from Admiral.

Quite impressed given my mileage.

Nah, his broker reads usenet.

Peter - What's your Pinquecento worth now? What saving would you have made over those three years if you'd insured it TPFT?

Possibly not much. In some cases, TPFT for young drivers can actually cost more than fully comprehensive.

Seems to be the case - I usually use H&R who are very good on s**te old Alfas (Katie has the 75 insured with an agreed value of £2k with them for around £350 FC) - but they load you for anything over 10k miles / year. I've declared 20k / year with Admiral - most companies seem to want a 100% loading for that.

Er, are you having a laugh ?

You've just listed a bunch of dodgy old s**te - I'd take a 106 GTi (Saxo VTS, with leather) over any of the above ! And so would you !

Astra GTE ? Rover 220 ? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !

...and you have to drive a pile of shit.

If you can afford modern ride-quality/safety/gadgets/build-quality/rust-proofing etc. etc. then you don't drive around in a dodgy old banger !

Three grand ? Minted ? Your average 17 year old will earn more than that from their Summer job ! I certainly did.

But they cost almost nothing !

I can't think of any other modern, none-shit teeny-box cars that sell for less than the 106/Saxo ?

If I had to drive a teeny-box, then it'd be a 106 GTi.

I'd avoid it for all those reasons :)

Er, that's totally incorrect !

You've just listed two different cars ! The Mk1 is not the Mk2 :)

Get some quotes, then discover the truth.

Simple example.

2000 Astra Coupe Turbo - £512 p.a.

2004 Astra Coupe Turbo - £512 p.a.

1995 Rover 620 TI - £568 p.a.

1999 Rover 620 TI - £568 p.a.

1997 Peugeot 406 V6 SE Coupe - £612 p.a.

2001 Peugeot 406 V6 SE Coupe - £612 p.a.

True, I don't drive around in a dodgy old banger. But it is about 13 years old, with decent rust proofing (galvanised), decent ride quality (hydraulic cit) and apparently decent build quality (well, it's made it to this old without bits falling off!). It's lighter than a pug 206, so probably does lose on passive safety, but I have an excellent solution to that (don't drive like a tit), and tbh gadgets don't bother me.

I can afford to spend quite a lot more - the question is, why should I want to?

cheers, clive

Indeed. I drive a 16 yr old Mercedes on an every day basis. Better build quality than *anything* you can buy new, pretty good rust proofing, good ride quality, ABS and pre-tensioners (Merc had them back in the early 80's). The 911 which weighs in at 1140 kg, has 231 bhp, is better built than most new stuff, is galvanised and rust free, despite being 21 years old this year.

Ditto. Unless I can find a Rover SD1 Vitesse, I can't see me getting rid of the Merc in a hurry.

So? They didn't make the Mk2 in 1988, f****it!

New cars are for people who like wasting money!

Ok, explain to me why I've been quoted more in the past for a 3 year old Escort (Gp15) than for a 6 year old Cosworth (Gp20). More than once this has happened, with different cars, and every time they've used the excuse "It's because it's a newer car, sir"
