Yes, did I not mention that isn't working too well either? It's not a great idea to use the handbrake on a moving Land Rover - it puts a huge amount of stress on the diffs and general drivetrain.

Fortunately the trailer has a winch, so once I get it out and parked safely I can winch it on under some kind of control!

I know it's not a good idea, but it can be done IF you're carefull. And it's pretty effective if in good condition. I remember an MOT once where I drove the vehicle while the MOPT guy sat in the passenger seat with the tapley. When I applied the handbrake he was shouting "that's enough, we've got a footbrake reading already!"

Are you sure? I thought the handbrake was there to collect transfer box oil.. that's all that the one on my 109" ever did.

I used my handbrake to do an emergency stop. It didnt like it very much, and my transfer box started making funny noises afterwards (It sounds like its lost some teeth).

I'd just dropped it into a low gear too, and cant have been moving much faster than 10-15mph when i did it (maybe not even that)

The handbrake should be effective for gradual braking though. Even when theyre oily, they still work pretty well if you tighten them up (Mine was oily when i managed to stop with it)
