OT: Intel Macs - Official dual boot for XP

The GIMP is quite possibly a VERY GOOD APPLICATION but because the user interface has been designed with a "well I can find it even if every other person who ever uses it can't so what's the problem?" approach, most of it is hidden in obscurity.

The MAC has such a small software database that I reckon they give you everything ever written and you've still got several GB free to fill your computer with overpriced MP3's from your tied in online music download service.

ROFLMAO. So it's not even the full version? Classic.

Especially as it forms the GUI of Linux.

No, compare Quicktrime performance on a PC with Quicktime performance on a Mac.

Mac. Not MAC. Wipe up the drool before you short out your keyboard. ;)

Richard

Yes. What does Windows ship with again? If you want to move the goalposts to downloading additional packages...

No, it would be the Window Manager that does that.

Richard

And what Mr Gelded doesn't seem to realise is that OpenOffice, the Gimp and a shed load of other GPL'ed applications have bugger all to do with Linux. You can run all of these applications on Windows and MacOS.

No, but 3D games, even if they are a bit childish, do.

Richard

No, that merely controls the look and operation of the windows. Obviously you don't even know what X11 is. F*ck me, it appears I know more technically about your OS than you do.

Give you a clue. The layers are: #1 X Server, #2 Desktop Environment, #

3 Window Manager. All the Window manager does is control how the windows look and operate.

Without an X Server, you have no GUI other than a GEM like text mode offering.

Nope. Proper commercial games.

Yes. And the same as Windows, you pay for major updates. It's just that Windows hasn't had a major update in years.

I consider the 'free' aspect of this to be a stupid argument, to be honest. Linux isn't free when you get it with the same packaging and retail/user friendly arrangements. I saw your post about Ubuntu, but do you think Novell will give me a copy of SuSE Enterprise 10 Desktop for free?

Richard

Graphical, USER, Interface.

The GUI that you see is the GUI. Therefore, it is the Window Manager that is your GUI.

F*ck me, I appear to know more about computing, PERIOD, than you do.

Richard

Like Nanosaur 2?

Except that doesn't appear to be included on the Intel Macs, they have Big Bang Board Games and a trial version of Office 2004 instead.

But, I'm not aware of Windows coming with commercial games either ;)

Richard

Heck, you're right, the frame rate on a Mac is faster using the same chip at the same clock speed.

What was your point?

Prince of Persia, Myst/Riven/ whatever the new one is? There are a surprising number of PC games that originated on the Mac. How many "proper commercial games" are provided with an installation of Windows by the way?

No, you pay for new Operating Systems.

Mac OS X 10.x.x+1 is not a major update.

Because you know you can't win it.

Irrelevent.

No, its the Graphical USER interface. KDE is way different to interact with than TWM or FWM, or whatever.

Richard

Jesus, Conor. Go and learn about Mac OS, you're starting to look even more stupid. Do they do a BTEC course in OS X?

10.x.x+1 is an update that will be free. 10.x+1 is a major update, that you pay for, the same as Windows. Unlike Windows, it's immensely easy to go from an earlier version of OS X to the newest without totally breaking everything.

(Actually - have you seen the migration assistant that comes with the Mac? I hadn't had cause to use it until my parents got a new laptop; amazing - old iBook hooked up to new via FireWire; wait a while, new iBook is configured exactly as the old one - software, everything else - but with a later OS and so forth).

You are aware that Windows 2000 is also known as Windows NT 5, I hope?

NT 4 to NT 5 was Not Free.

Likewise, OS X.1 to OS X.2 was Not Free.

No, because I don't care. Believe it or not, I don't think you get the best solutions with 'free' software. Since people sell Linux software, I think there is a reason that people will buy their solutions, which wouldn't make sense if an adequate free alternative existed.

Because you can't?

Richard
